Origins of Memorial Day, New Product: Amazon Echo Silver, Covid-19 Update

Happy Friday! (and Happy Memorial Day Weekend!)

Remember how I talked yesterday about lunacy? Well, our revenue was up 65% over the previous day which was already up over 100% over normal levels. The advertising/marketing is working! It was another crazy day for the shipping crew, but they got it done.

I don’t think I have ever been so glad to see a weekend, especially a long one, in my life. I am flat out running on fumes to the point (and I am not joking) that when I walk I sometimes think I am going to trip over my own feet and fall down. My wife told me that my job this weekend is to sleep. Not only is she right, but how sweet! She must love me …. Or she doesn’t want to have to clean me up if I die in a fall on her floor. Either way, I get to sleep like I’m in a coma and I can’t wait. A few weekends ago I slept 16 straight hours. I wonder if I can beat that record!

I know my staff is wore out too, especially the folks in our warehouse / fulfillment center. I’ve been up there helping them some and I can see the tiredness in some of their faces. More the warehouse manager than anyone – he’s running in 20 directions keeping the show on the road. I am so grateful to the entire team for every part of their contribution to what we have been doing. Our sales and customer service people, web developers and product folks, and even my wife, who have jumped at my every request, many times at 12, 1, 2, 3AM to get things ready to go live for these emails. e-comm/marketing, purchasing, accounting, and Gary who is our Administrative Officer making sure that as fast as I break all the rules we clean up my messes. I’d like to thank the Academy ….. (and my parakeet).

As we head into this holiday weekend you might be wondering, what exactly is Memorial Day? We all probably or hopefully know generally what it is about, but I thought I would do a little research and share the highlights since we are headed into the holiday weekend.

Today’s COVID Updates, Marketing Excitement, and Charlie the Unicorn

It’s Thursday … I think.

Let me tell you a little something about marketing …. it’s awesome! Why did it take me 19 years and a pandemic to figure this out? Not that we didn’t do some form of marketing before (mostly SEO and Google Adwords) but what we have jumped into the past several weeks is a whole different world.

First of all, I acknowledge that the health and safety products are in high demand, and unlike some retailers we actually have stock, and … this is a product that applies to a wide audience of both consumer and business customers, so the things we are doing have an amplified effect. But, holy cow. We’ve really stumbled onto something.

We’ve been doing radio ads here in Atlanta for a couple weeks now and that has worked pretty well; so much so that we are about to expand to other stations in other cities. But we also partnered with a company that helps you get your message out to the e-mail lists of other companies that have lots of e-mail subscribers. One of those companies is an “AARP like” company that has a gigantic e-mail list. It’s all opt in and such – their subscribers look for and want these “offers” that come to their inbox. Their list is roughly 800,000 subscribers. We started yesterday with a subsection of the list – about 65,000 of them.

I was at the warehouse QA’ing orders (quality assurance – verifying count and accuracy) for EIGHT hours from 3pm till 11pm. We called people back in to work at 8pm. It was lunacy. We all left good and exhausted.

Even more lunacy? Another email blast is going out tomorrow morning to 170,000 people! We’d better GIRD OUR LOINS (long version) cause tomorrow is going to be rough (I hope!)

I’ll admit that we really don’t know what we are doing when it comes to consumer marketing. (Why would we?). The truth of the matter is that this whole health and safety supplies journey is teaching us a lot … about a lot. I am serious when I say this … if you have any suggestions or referrals to anything or anyone that you think might be helpful to us for marketing, let me know. Since we have a nearly unlimited supply of most of the health and safety items we are selling, we are really trying to strike while the iron is hot. Why wouldn’t we, right?

On the product development front I got more webcam samples in today and tested them. I was hoping to have a “good, better, best” offering fairly quickly but I have got to be honest – most of the samples I have been receiving have been crap! The one I got today literally made me look 10 years older. I am not even joking. Is that a selling feature?? Maybe for underage kids trying to look older online or something …. Hmm maybe it has a market after all! Kidding! I am going to keep at it and get some products launched soon! I am working with a dozen factories to find what I like best. I will not give up!

2020 IT budgets being slashed |Thermometers and Alcohol Wipes In stock!

Happy Wednesday!

Gartner Predicts IT Spending Will Plummet By $300 Billion In 2020 As CIOs Slash Budgets. To a large degree this makes a lot of sense to me. The country has been shut down for weeks and weeks, lets just say 3-4 months by the time people are back in the swing of things – maybe. So, If you lose 1/3 of your year it stands to reason that you’d spend less on IT this year. But while logical, that doesn’t mean it’s music to the ears of everyone in the IT supply chain. If product A isn’t getting bought, the components that make up product A aren’t getting bought, and the labor to make them isn’t needed, and so on and so on. I’ve basically just described how an economy works. The wheels on the bus go round and round. Anyway, only time will really tell. I know there are plenty of people ready to GET SOMETHING DONE so if they can advance their projects they will. But, both companies and individuals alike pull back on discretionary spending when things are uncertain or revenue is down. That’s why consumer spending is one of the biggest predictors of economic growth – as they spend, the businesses have to invest to keep up with the demand, and the wheels on the bus go round and round. What do you think?

Today was a big day. After a heck of a lot of waiting, and money spent, we finally got a shipment of 800 thermometers in today. I used UPS CRITICAL to ship this one in, and even though it is about the most expensive shipping you can buy, it still took 6 or 7 days to get here. Customs leaving China plus the capacity on planes is just overrun. But, they showed up and this morning we will start getting orders out. Finally. I still have others on order that should be here shortly.

Here is a video of it!

Enjoy the Small Things, 10oz Pump Top Gel Hand Sanitizer, Alcohol Wipes, Cheaper KN95’s, and more!

Happy Tuesday!

The sounds of the birds chirping. The smell of coffee roasting. The endless possibilities that lie ahead of you today. Take a moment to enjoy the day for all the small things!

We have been working like maniacs over here at CK to get and keep the things you need and are asking for in stock. It’s easy to wear slap out so this advice is for me more than anyone!

It rained here Sunday night/Monday morning (and I left my shoes by the pool Sunday night. I NEVER do that, but I did and they were soaked yesterday morning. But I had another pair and I just stopped to be thankful for the rain. Praise God almighty for the many blessings – especially the small ones like wet shoes that come from a relaxing rain, or the sound of a bird chirping, or the pleasures of a cup (or 20) of coffee. Life is short. Enjoy it the best you can!

Here is today’s version of the email update. I keep rearranging it trying to see what I like best. Unless and until I put images in the email sometimes it is hard to describe and get quick attention to the things I would like you to see. If you have any preferences or suggestions please share them with me.

Captain Picard, Isolation Gowns Launched, Fiber Cables, and Buying Pre-owned Cisco

Happy Monday!

Did you know that Jean Luc Picard is back in a new series “Star Trek: Picard”? I just finished season one a few weeks ago and it’s fantastic. A friend said “I would listen to Patrick Stewart read the phone book”. I grew up watching Next Generation and I agree. After I finished Picard, while I am waiting for a new season, I heard about and started watching Star Trek: Discovery. Also fantastic! VERY fantastic! I just finished the last episode of season 2 over the weekend. So then I said hmm … what now? I never thought I would do this …. I started watching the original series! I am only a few episodes in but it’s cool to see where it all started! I was shocked to find out there were only three seasons of the original show. So, it won’t take long to get through them and then figure out where to go from there. I may try to watch it all chronologically, including all the movies. If you haven’t seen the new shows I highly recommend them!

Believe it or not, at CablesAndKits, even though safety supplies have been in the spotlight lately, our primary business is technology. For most of our 19 years in business we have been focused in two major areas: Pre-owned and fully refurbished (by us) Cisco Network Hardware (Switches, Transceiver modules, Cisco Phones, etc) and Network infrastructure (Ethernet, Fiber Cabling, Power Cords, etc). Let me tell you a couple things that might change your life …

There is very little reason to buy Cisco Transceivers “new” from a Cisco partner / distributor (“the channel”). With the newest switches and firewalls and such, if you want “SmartNet” coverage, there are reasons why you might want to buy from the channel. Not so for transceivers. It is a pluggable module that has no “software” on it and cannot be covered by SmartNet independently anyway (it is covered by whatever device it is installed in at the time). You can pay $400-600 for one from the channel, or you can buy one pre-owned from us for $35-150 each. Pre-owned can mean “pre-loved”, tested, and refurbished, or it can mean brand new never used in the box. Think of it like this…. You bought 100 switches and 100 (or more) transceivers to deploy on a project and ended up with too many. You can’t return them to Cisco, so you sell them to someone like us. We offer them to our customers at a huge savings over buying from the channel. Another scenario is you install a transceiver, use it for months, weeks, or days, and remove and replace it with a different model. You sell that to us, we test it, clean it, and offer it for sale at a huge savings. In both cases we provide a LIFETIME warranty on these products and a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. What do you have to lose? (The money you are wasting elsewhere, that’s what).

The most common Cisco transceiver bought today is the SFP-10G-SR. You can view the buying options and if you have ANY questions just let us know. If you are nervous about pre-owned, buy new. But I have been doing this 19 years and strongly suggest you buy the pre-owned. If nothing else, buy one and check it out. Back orders are ok – we have PLENTY of these in our supply chain. If you have any needs whatsoever, let us know and a sales rep can help you navigate the options, help you plan your options and delivery dates, etc.

We mastered fiber cabling many many years ago. We have three factories in China where our fiber cables are made and we receive shipments every day. In fact, our supply chain is so well oiled that we order fiber on Monday and it is manufactured and in the building on Thursday. (and Tue->Friday, Wed and Thur->Monday, etc). We have basic and premium options for fiber and our premium cables use Corning Fiber cores and upgraded connectors. Not only can you save a pile of money over the big name brands, you can work with people that can get you anything you need, when you need it.

This link will take you to a 1 Meter, OM3 (10 Gig), LC to LC Standard boot Premium fiber cable. It (and the basic version) is our best seller. From there you can change the different options to get what you need. And, if you want OM4 or OM5 (people do buy them but you’ll KNOW it when you need them) you can navigate to those pages in the top level navigation menu. You can order as many as you need and if they are not in stock they will ship in 3-5 days so order up! And as always, let us know if you have any questions at all.

I could go on and on about the things we sell, and I will try to fit in a product group here or there, but I figured it was my duty to at least mention a few of our top selling product lines! I’ll talk about other product lines and points of interest in future emails. If you have any questions let me know and I can also try to answer some of those in this email.
I’ve refactored the way the email is laid out, and I am sure I will refactor it 100 times in the future. I want to be verbose at times, but I don’t want to let something sit stale day after day if I can help it.

Start here: SAFETY SUPPLIES LANDING PAGE

I am still making progress on 75% alcohol wipes. More info coming soon.

COVID-19 News for Today

  • Over 1,872,000 people worldwide have recovered and over 346,000 people in the US have recovered!
  • The emotional health of Americans is improving as states move to reopen their economies following weeks of stay-at-home orders, a Gallup survey finds.
  • Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) say they worried a lot of the previous day, down from 59 percent in a survey conducted in late March and early April.
  • Those reporting having experienced boredom have also dropped, to 41 percent from 46 percent. And those reporting having experienced happiness have risen to 72 percent, from 67 percent.
  • Meanwhile, the number of Americans reporting loneliness has remained unchanged, with 24 percent saying they experienced it “a lot” during the previous day.
  • After more than two months, Italy took further steps Monday to exit its prolonged coronavirus restrictions, allowing restaurants, hairdressers and shops to reopen and public masses to resume. The return of public masses marked the end of a confrontation between the Italian government and the Catholic Church over the timing of that move, which the government had originally scheduled for later.
  • • Four months into the U.S. coronavirus outbreak, tests for the virus finally are becoming widely available, a crucial step toward lifting stay-at-home orders and safely returning to normal life. But while many states no longer report crippling supply shortages, a new problem has emerged: too few people lining up to get tested.
  • • Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary slammed the British government for its handling of the coronavirus crisis on Monday and called plans to impose a 14-day quarantine for international travelers “laughable.” Speaking to BBC Radio 4, O’Leary said the policy was “idiotic and unimplementable,” adding that officials should be taking steps to impose more “effective measures,” such as issuing clearer guidance on face masks. The new quarantine policy has not been easy to understand. Under the rule, those arriving in Britain will have to self-isolate for two weeks — a restriction that some critics say should have been implemented earlier in the year.
  • Chinese president Xi Jinping will deliver a speech to the World Health Assembly on Monday, according to the state-run Global Times, amid global calls for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus.
  • Hundreds of military personnel are reenlisting or postponing their departures from the armed forces this year, the Associated Press reported, as a historic economic downturn casts a cloud of uncertainty over employment and college prospects.
  • Across all three branches, hundreds of service members are signing up for new short-term extensions that offer job security, steady paycheck and benefits — a combination that has all but vanished from the job market during the coronavirus pandemic.

CEO Daily Update 5.15.2020

Safety Supplies Landing Page: https://www.cablesandkits.com/c/safety-supplies

If you received this email from a friend/co-worker/complete stranger and want to sign-up to receive it yourself, you can do so HERE.

Happy FRIDAY!!!!

Forward this email to 10 people or your cat will melt. That sounds a lot like the emails we used to get back in the day. “If you don’t send this email to 10 people you know, you will become infested with Argentinian sweat worms”. I don’t recall any exact examples but they really made my eyes roll. I never went for that sort of manipulation, and I hope you didn’t either. But seriously, if you don’t forward this email to at least 10 people, your cat will melt. haha

I have had so many people tell me today that they heard about us from a friend that forwarded them an email. I think I mentioned this the other day but we got a huge order and when I spoke to the guy he said someone he worked with had sent him the email. He was in purchasing and needed a source. She was a customer of ours personally and sent him the email. So, it got me thinking … we don’t really know who comes from where. So yesterday we launched a feature on the signup page of the site that asks how you heard about us. “I plead the fifth” is an actual option for those that don’t kiss and tell. 18% heard our radio ad, 26% was Google, and 26% were from a friend telling them or forwarding them an email! (and the rest was “other”, “plead the fifth”, etc). That is just one day of data but it made me think – I have got to get you guys forwarding these emails to people!

If you do, say something nice – even if you have to lie (haha kidding. Sorta.). If you received this email as a forward and want to sign up, I added a link to the signup page at the very top of this email. And, if YOU don’t forward to 10 people you know, ……. your cat will melt.

4oz Liquid Hand Sanitizer arrived! It’s on the site and ready to order!

WE LAUNCHED our Desktop Hand Sanitizer dispenser! I am so excited about it. I tested it myself and even shot a video. We are going to get it on the product page and the CK YouTube channel and all that jazz but I wanted to let you see it NOW, so I just uploaded it unedited to my personal YouTube account. Take a look: https://youtu.be/a7uWVLoyYvE

Take a look at the dispenser here: https://www.cablesandkits.com/mc/dispensers/desktop/fam-282/fp-18819/

The 200 we have on order should arrive TODAY. I am ordering more and they should be here in the next week or so. Order as many as you want and we will get them out now or when the next batch arrives!

These are great for gel or liquid hand sanitizer. You can also use for soap. Put them anywhere you want convenient hand sanitizer! Put ‘em on the trunk, put ‘em on the hood. Put one up with the driver, it’ll make him feel good. (Let’s see who gets that reference without clicking the link! 3:00 mark)
