As you may have heard, there is a new widespread security vulnerability out on the interwebs called “Heartbleed”.

Let me start out by saying that cablesandkits.com was not / is not vulnerable. We were aware of the Heartbleed vulnerability and took steps to confirm our status within 24 hours of when the vulnerability was made known to the public.  Our on-going promise is to take every precaution possible to keep our site and your information safe not only from Heartbleed, but any other attack.

Now that we have that out of the way, you are probably wondering, “What in the world is Heartbleed?”

HeartBleed

Well, we can help with that. Since this is an ever-evolving situation, we will stick to the facts and the best ways to protect yourself and your personal data.

First off, what exactly is Heartbleed? (Ok, this is going to get VERY technical, but only for a moment…)

From cnet.com:

Heartbleed is a security vulnerability in OpenSSL software that lets a hacker access the memory of data servers. That means a user’s sensitive personal data — including usernames, passwords, and credit card information — is potentially at risk of being intercepted. The vulnerability also means an attacker could steal a server’s digital keys that are used to encrypt communications and get access to a company’s secret internal documents.

Now, most importantly, what do you need to do about it?

  • If you think you might have visited a site that is infected or is vulnerable to Heartbleed, you need to change your password, please wait until you get confirmation from the specific website/online store that the vulnerability has been patched. You can check a site with a tool called LastPass. We would recommend even if you use the tool to check with the company itself to confirm that they are safe and not vulnerable to Heartbleed.
  • You should be cautious about visiting websites that you do not trust.  Generally the risk is

CK Q2 Meeting - Main

We had a “super” fun-filled Q2 staff meeting this week! As you can see the theme of the meeting revolved around super heroes. It was an awesome time recapping the Q1 results and initiatives, then diving deep into some of the awesome things we have planned for the business and our customers for Q2.

For an added bonus here are some more snapshots of what went on at the meeting…

Have you ever wondered what the personality of your network is? If not, should you?  It is something to ponder. I mean think about it…

Is your network calm?

Is your network crazy?

Is your network energetic?

Is your network romantic?

Or maybe your network has a split personality…

Seriously, the personality traits of your network could go on and on. It would probably be in your best interest to nail down what its personality and mindset is so you can better support it, or change it!

Well, this is where we are here to help! We have broken down what all the colors mean as it pertains to your network. So let’s take a deep psychological look at what the color of your Ethernet cabling means for your network (or at least humor us in our feeble attempt at some lightheartedness). Don’t forget to let us know what personality your network has.

It was a warm, spring day. Not unlike any other spring day in Atlanta, GA. The sun was shining, the breeze felt warm, and of course there was pollen everywhere. Just your regular day in Georgia.

Then something happened…the weather turned from bright and sunny to overcast and chilly. Now, truth be told, this too is not unlike any regular Georgian day. As they say, “If you ever get tired of the weather in Georgia, just wait a minute.” But this wasn’t your typical turn-on-a-dime change in weather. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but something was amiss.

Then I heard it. A loud sound. It wasn’t a boom. It wasn’t a bam. It was more like an elongated “fizzle and a sizzle”. The closest thing I can think of is the sound Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory makes right when he pulls the switch and all those electrodes start flicking.

Comic Pod

I ran into the warehouse and saw the same thing the rest of the gang saw. There in the middle of aisle 23, between the rack of our Cisco 2950 routers and the HP L306 power cables was a pod. A tall, shiny pod. A tall shiny GLOWING pod. With one red button. (Now I’ve seen my fair share of funny things in our warehouse, but never anything like this!)

As we all stood around it, we waited to see who would be the first to approach it.

We stood for a long time.

A really long time.

I think we all kinda felt like we were in an episode of Star Trek, and nobody wanted to be the red shirt guy. (you know what we mean…) Finally our fearless leader Craig, being the role model he is (or maybe it was because it was delaying shipping orders for so long),  walked up to the box.

“There’s writing on it.” He called back to us. Just beneath

With broken hearts, we are all aware of the devastation that has taken place in Oklahoma. The pictures and videos that we have all seen on the news will stay with us for a long time. Many of us have cried over the children and others whose lives were lost, and we have rejoiced over the stories of true miracles that have taken place.

At CablesAndKits, one of our core values is to ‘Serve Others”. We feel this is a prime opportunity to serve the people and communities affected by this tragic event, and at the same time share the love of Christ with them.  The families that are affected by this disaster have immediate physical needs and we want to help. We also need to keep them in mind and in prayer as they continue to recover and work through all of the emotions during this time.

CablesAndKits is joining with Journey Church, a local church in the area affected, to help serve the communities that have been destroyed by the tornadoes. In speaking with the church, their immediate needs are both money and supplies. CK and staff are going to help and we want to get the word out to all of you so you know the ways in which you can help also.

Two of our awesome team members, Denisia and Jordan, are spearheading this initiative and have been working very hard to get everything set up here at the office.  We are making our office available as a collection site for others in the community and surrounding areas that want to contribute supplies.  We are planning several

This week we rolled out our awesome new CK stickers and it has been quite fun seeing where these things are popping up, not only in the office but with our customers as well! Our staff has gotten very creative in showcasing the stickers, but so have some of you.  We have gotten a few pics of the stickers showing up on cars, phones, and even their children’s toys…haha! If you got a sticker already, please send us a pic of it “in action”, we would love to see how you are showing your CK spirit!

Monkey Name Release

Well, we started this week off with a bang! It was a very busy week. We had part 2 of our quarterly meeting to go over the financials for the previous quarter, but we had something else fun in store as well!  You have probably seen our little robot monkey hanging around in our emails, website, and print materials. The little fella has become a true part of the CK family and has fit right in quickly, but there has been one thing missing… a name! This week, the staff got to find out the name of the CK monkey (which they all voted on)  and hear his background story.  The guy is definitely a man…errr…monkey of mystery!  In celebration of the monkey finally getting his name  our President, Dave, led us in a toast of bananas and showed us how monkeys actually open and eat bananas - its not like you would think it would be!  We are very excited about his new name and we will be sharing it with the public very soon! Stay tuned!

New CablesAndKits Nav

Something else we were very excited about releasing this week was our new navigation for the website. Our goal was to make it easier for you, the customer, to get to what you needed quicker.  We went through and re-categorized some of our product lines – like Fiber Cables, Ethernet, and  Cisco Equipment – to make a little more sense and

Q2 Meeting

Well it was that time again, time for the Quarter 2 kick-off meeting! It is always a blast at these meetings…never a dull moment.  This time around we kicked it off with some Chick-fil-a biscuits and then everyone got ready to get to work and start “framing up” with their Home Depot aprons. This quarter our theme is Framing Up.  We have laid the foundations now we are starting to  build the walls around becoming Experts in Awesome.  We did a quick review of last quarter and what we were able to accomplish,  we also recognized our first set of Gold Star core value award winners for Q1:  It was a great meeting rolling out the plans for the quarter.  We are going to be busy, but our customers and community are going to reap the benefits!
